Understanding a Behavioral Health Crisis

A behavioral health crisis occurs when an individual's emotional state or behavior puts them or others at risk of harm, or when they are unable to function safely in their current environment. Crises can be triggered by a wide range of factors including medication changes, traumatic events, loss, substance use, or escalating symptoms of mental illness.

Knowing how to recognize the signs of a crisis and understanding the appropriate steps to take can help protect safety and connect the individual with the right level of support.
